Wellbeing Wisdom Inspired by a Rescue Dog
Meet Buddy. Buddy is a little rescue dog with some big challenges. Let's set aside the fact that his adoption profile described him as an "easy-going, chilled, and social dog who doesn't bark much." Buddy is a very sweet, one-year-old Jack Russell, but he didn’t receive basic skills training and, prior to coming into my care, was surrendered by his original owners, and passed through two other homes. At this point in his life, "easy-going" or "chilled" don't quite apply! He is incredibly hypervigilant, always on guard, and struggles to relax. He has a high prey drive and work drive, he’s reactive to people, animals, and cars. He’s also a bit neurotic and motion-sensitive—anything from fans, bugs and things blowing in the wind can send him into a frenzy.
Buddy is currently learning that life isn’t as scary as he believes it to be. As he learns, he has re-illuminated and humbled me with some powerful reminders about life and well-being.
